Western Power / Synergy Community Battery

Petro Min Engineers (PME) is proud to have played a key role in delivering five new community battery energy storage systems across the Perth metropolitan area, in collaboration with Western Power and Synergy.

These installations form part of a growing network of local energy storage systems that aim to improve grid resilience, support the integration of rooftop solar, and provide cleaner, more reliable energy to local communities.

Project Overview
Each of the five battery systems consists of a 100kW ATESS inverter and 560kWh CATL lithium batteries strategically located across Perth suburbs to support residential solar and improve power quality.

Each system was engineered with smart control integration to ensure seamless operation within the distribution network.

PME Scope of Work
PME was engaged to deliver the full control and monitoring suite for these sites, including:

Electrical Design: electrical schematics and system integration drawings

Control System Programming:

PLC based control system including custom local HMI based on the Phoenix Contact PLCnext architecture.

Multiple Communication Systems, including
– CANbus communication with the lithium battery systems.
– RS485 Modbus interfacing to the battery inverter.
– IEC 61850 protocol to the protection relay for grid compliance.
– Sparkplug B MQTT and DNP3 based high level control inputs.

HMI Design: Local touchscreen interfaces for diagnostics and control

Remote Monitoring System: Secure cloud-based telemetry with performance dashboards, alarms, and remote access

This project marks another step forward in Western Australia’s energy transformation — with PME at the forefront of distributed energy integration and intelligent control.
